THE SCROLL OF HANDS THAT WILL NOT LET GO
(Finding Reassurance When You Feel Abandoned)
Written by one who stumbled and felt alone,
who searched Scripture during difficult hours,
and who found comfort in its pictures of hands that steady, carry, and uphold.
“My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all others, and no one can snatch them out of the Father’s hand.”

Scripture gives powerful pictures of Jehovah supporting those who look to him for help.
The words below are a personal reflection drawn from the Scriptures cited.
when people disappoint us,
when strength feels small,
and our own grip on hope begins to weaken.
In such moments,
fear may tell us that we have been abandoned.
Scripture gives us something steadier to remember:
our weakness does not make Jehovah weak.
“For I, Jehovah your God, am grasping your right hand,
the One saying to you, ‘Do not be afraid. I will help you.’”
— Isaiah 41:13
not a frightened person pretending to need no help,
but a hand being grasped
when courage is difficult to find.
Scripture also speaks of being carried
through seasons in which our own strength changes.
“Until you grow old I will be the same;
until your hair is gray I will keep bearing you.
As I have done, I will carry you and bear you and rescue you.”
— Isaiah 46:4
contrasting Jehovah with powerless idols that had to be carried.
Jehovah is presented differently:
as the One who carries rather than needing to be carried.
Falling does not always mean the journey is over.
Scripture even describes a righteous person stumbling
while still being supported.
“Although he may fall, he will not be hurled down,
for Jehovah supports him by the hand.”
— Psalm 37:24
It speaks instead of support in the midst of stumbling.
That distinction matters when failure,
disappointment,
or weakness makes us feel unworthy of getting back up.
Jesus also used the picture of secure hands
when speaking about those who listen to his voice and follow him.
“I give them everlasting life, and they will by no means ever be destroyed,
and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all others,
and no one can snatch them out of the Father’s hand.”

those who hear his voice and follow him.
His words point not to human invincibility,
but to the security found under the care of Christ
and the Father who is greater than all.
So when your own grip feels weak,
you do not have to pretend that you are strong.
Pray honestly.
Return to what Scripture actually says.
Accept help from trustworthy people when you need it.
And remember that stumbling is not the same as being abandoned.

weakness does not make you worthless,
falling does not mean you cannot rise again,
and fear does not have the authority to declare that Jehovah has forgotten you.
Scripture gives us reason to seek Jehovah’s support even when our own strength feels uncertain.
Personal Reflection: When Your Grip Feels Weak
The Scriptures in this scroll do not teach that faithful people will never stumble, feel frightened, or experience abandonment by others. They use the picture of hands to communicate support, care, and security. These reflections are meant to help us understand those passages without turning poetic or covenant language into promises Scripture itself does not make.
• You do not have to pretend that you are unafraid.
Isaiah 41:13 — “I, Jehovah your God, am grasping your right hand... ‘Do not be afraid. I will help you.’”
Reflection: This promise was spoken to God’s people in its own historical setting, but the picture tells us something important about Jehovah as Scripture presents him. Fear is acknowledged, not mocked, and help is pictured as a hand reaching toward the frightened.
• Jehovah is pictured as the One who carries.
Isaiah 46:4 — “I will carry you and bear you and rescue you.”
Reflection: In context, Jehovah contrasts himself with idols that people had to carry. He reminds Israel that he had carried them instead. The passage is not a blanket promise that every hardship will be removed, but it reveals a striking biblical contrast: Jehovah does not depend on his worshippers to sustain him.
• Stumbling is not the same as being abandoned.
Psalm 37:24 — “Although he may fall, he will not be hurled down, for Jehovah supports him by the hand.”
Reflection: The psalm allows for the possibility of falling. Its comfort is not “you will never stumble,” but that stumbling need not become final ruin. When you make a mistake or experience a setback, do not automatically interpret it as proof that your relationship with Jehovah is over.
• Read Jesus’ words in their full setting.
John 10:28–29 — “No one will snatch them out of my hand... no one can snatch them out of the Father’s hand.”
Reflection: Jesus is speaking about his sheep—those who hear his voice and follow him. Verse 28 speaks of Christ’s hand, and verse 29 speaks of the Father’s hand. Together they express powerful security under Christ and his Father; they should not be separated from Jesus’ description of those who listen to and follow him.
• Personal Reflection: Where does your grip feel weakest right now? Are you dealing with fear, loneliness, failure, exhaustion, or disappointment? Instead of demanding that you feel strong immediately, what would it look like to bring that weakness honestly to Jehovah and take one steady step forward?
When your own grip feels weak, Scripture gives you reason to keep reaching toward the One it describes as able to support you.
